7 Days to Die is a fantastic survival game, but servers can get heavy as the world grows. With the right settings and hardware, you can minimize lag.
Hardware Requirements
- RAM: 6-8 GB for 4-8 players. 10-16 GB for larger servers.
- CPU: High single-core performance is crucial. Blood Moon hordes are very CPU-intensive.
- Storage: NVMe is strongly recommended. The world grows constantly and read speed matters.
Server Settings for Performance
Adjust these settings in serverconfig.xml:
- MaxSpawnedZombies: Lower from 64 to 40-50 if you have lag
- MaxSpawnedAnimals: Lower from 50 to 30-40
- WorldGenSize: Smaller worlds load faster
- BloodMoonEnemyCount: Blood Moon zombies per player. Lower if Blood Moon is laggy.
- ServerMaxAllowedViewDistance: Lower view distance for less server load
Automatic Restarts
7DtD has memory leaks. Schedule an automatic restart every 12-24 hours. Through the game panel, you can set this up as a scheduled task.
Mods and Performance
Overhaul mods like Darkness Falls are heavier than vanilla. Count on 50% more RAM and CPU with large modpacks. Always test with a few players before opening the server to everyone.
