A small group of up to 4 players runs well on 4 GB. For groups of 8 or more with larger bases, 8 GB is recommended. If you plan to play with 16 players and extensive building, go for 16 GB.
Yes, you can upload your existing world file via SFTP. That way you continue right where you left off. Make a backup on both sides first.
Yes, automatic backups are enabled by default and you can restore one yourself through the game panel. If you want to go further back, you can add extra backup slots.
