Wipes are an essential part of Rust. They reset the server and give everyone an equal start. But when are wipes, what gets reset, and how do you configure them on your own server?
What Is a Wipe?
A wipe resets the game world. All buildings, items, and progress are erased. There are two types:
- Map wipe: All buildings and items are erased. Blueprints are kept.
- Blueprint wipe (BP wipe): All learned blueprints are also reset. This is a complete reset.
Forced Wipes
Facepunch (the developer) forces a map wipe on the first Thursday of every month. This is called a "forced wipe" or "force wipe." All servers, regardless of their wipe schedule, are reset.
Common Wipe Schedules
- Weekly: Wipe every Thursday. Popular for competitive servers.
- Biweekly: Wipe every two weeks. Good balance.
- Monthly: Only forced wipes. More time to build.
Setting Up Wipes on Your Server
For a map wipe: delete the .sav and .map files from your server directory and restart. For a BP wipe: also delete the *.db files. At HostValues, you can do this through the game panel or schedule it automatically.
