Minecraft Version Numbers Explained: Why There Is No 1.22

If you are wondering what happened to Minecraft 1.22, the answer is simple: it does not exist. Mojang replaced the old numbering system in 2026.

The New System

Starting in 2026, Minecraft uses year-based version numbers. All 2026 versions start with 26:

  • 26.1 Tiny Takeover (March 24, 2026): First game drop of the year
  • 26.2 Chaos Cubed (June 16, 2026): Second drop
  • 26.3 Wilderness Bound (September 15, 2026): Third drop, the newest release
  • 26.4 (planned for Q4 2026): Fourth drop, currently in snapshots

Why the Change?

The old numbers said nothing about when a version came out, and since 1.21 the updates arrived as several smaller drops per year. The new scheme fixes that: 26 is the year, the second number counts the drops and a third number is only used for hotfixes, such as 26.1.1. Bedrock Edition also starts its 2026 versions with 26, but counts differently, so Java and Bedrock numbers do not match one to one.
