Minecraft 26.1 vs 26.2 vs 26.3: All 2026 Versions Compared

Since March 2026 Minecraft is no longer called 1.21-point-something. After 1.21.11 came 26.1 (March 24, 2026), then 26.2 "Chaos Cubed" (June 16) and 26.3 "Wilderness Bound" (September 15). The year is now part of the version number, and Mojang ships several of these "drops" a year; 26.4 is planned for the fourth quarter of 2026. Little changes for players. For anyone running a server, a few things do: every drop can break plugins, the Java requirement went up to 25, and a world that has run on a newer version cannot go back.

26.1 vs 26.2 vs 26.3 in short

• 26.1 Tiny Takeover gave almost all baby mobs a new look, added the golden dandelion and craftable name tags, and made Java 25 mandatory.
• 26.2 Chaos Cubed added the sulfur caves biome, the sulfur cube, sulfur and cinnabar block sets, and two new server.properties settings for spam kicks (chat-spam-threshold-seconds and command-spam-threshold-seconds).
• 26.3 Wilderness Bound added the dappled forest, poplar wood, abandoned camps, cushions, the straw bed and wool and concrete stairs and slabs. On new servers the whitelist is now on by default. All details are in what is new in 26.3.

What changes for you as a server admin

Java 25 is mandatory. This is the change that takes most servers down. A server moving from 1.21.x to 26.x that is still on Java 21 will not start. In the game panel you set the Java image under Startup to Java 25; exactly how, and which error you see otherwise, is in which Java version your server needs.

Check plugins with every drop. Every drop requires updates for plugins that reach deep into server internals (WorldEdit, protection plugins, some economy plugins). Before you update, check the plugin page for a build for the new version. Plugins that only use the regular API usually keep working.

Watch the whitelist on new 26.3 servers. A freshly generated server.properties now contains white-list=true. If nobody can join a new server, that is usually why.

World upgrades are one-way. Once your world has run on 26.3, 26.2 will not open it cleanly. Always take a backup through the Backups tab before touching the version selector. It takes a minute and saves a world.

Modpacks lag behind, and that is normal. Many large packs, such as All The Mods 10 (1.21.1) and Prominence II (1.20.1), are built for older versions. If you run a modpack, the pack decides your version, not the newest drop.

Should you update to 26.3 now?

Status as of October 13, 2026:

• Vanilla or Fabric: yes, if your mods have a 26.3 build. Take a backup, check Java 25, switch version, restart.
• Paper with plugins: Paper 26.3 has been stable since October 11, 2026. Check your key plugins for 26.3 builds first and take a backup (Java 25).
• Network or many plugins: test on a copy first. In the panel you make that copy by restoring a backup onto a second server.
• Modpack: do nothing until the pack itself moves.

Trying the 26.4 snapshots

The 26.4 snapshots started on September 22, 2026. The first one makes Vulkan the default renderer, the second changes the fog at the edge of your render distance and redesigns the debug screen, and the third (October 6) adds the ice caves, the frostbite and the Freezing effect. Never run snapshots on your main world: a snapshot world is not guaranteed to open in the final release. A test server with a copy of your world is the safe route. What is the latest Minecraft version?

Minecraft Java Edition 26.3 "Wilderness Bound", released on September 15, 2026. The next drop, 26.4, is planned for the fourth quarter of 2026.

Why did Mojang switch to year numbers?

Because the old numbering said nothing about when something came out. 26.1 now means: first drop of 2026. That makes it easier to see how old a server or modpack is.

Can I stay on 1.21.11?

Yes. Older versions remain available in the version selector. Note that Paper no longer supports 1.21.11 since June 15, 2026, so there are no more Paper updates for it, and over time plugin authors stop updating for old versions too.

Will my Bedrock players on Geyser still work after the update?

Only once Geyser supports the new version. Check the Geyser download page for support for 26.3 before you update, otherwise Bedrock players cannot join for a while. How Geyser works is in our GeyserMC guide.
