Minecraft 26.1, 26.2 and 26.3: what changes for your server?

Since March 2026 Minecraft is no longer called 1.21-point-something. After 1.21.11 came 26.1 (24 March 2026), then 26.2 "Chaos Cubed" (16 June), and 26.3 follows in September. The year is now part of the version number, and Mojang ships three such "drops" a year. Little changes for players. For anyone running a server, a few things do: every drop can break plugins, the Java requirement went up to 25, and a world that has run on a newer version cannot go back.

The 2026 versions at a glance

VersionReleasedJavaWhat it means for your server
1.21.11late 202521The last 1.x. Many modpacks still sit on 1.21.1.
26.124 March 202625First drop with the new numbering. Java 25 required. Patches 26.1.1 (1 April) and 26.1.2 (9 April).
26.2 "Chaos Cubed"16 June 202625Current stable version. Paper 26.2 is available.
26.3September 202625In snapshots now. New forest biome (dappled forest) with poplars, wool and concrete stairs, straw beds, abandoned camps.

Dates are from the version history on the Minecraft Wiki; the 26.3 contents from the 26.3 page.

What changes for you as a server admin

Java 25 is mandatory. This is the change that takes most servers down. A server moving from 1.21.x to 26.x that is still on Java 21 will not start. In the game panel you set the Java image under Startup to Java 25; exactly how, and which error you see otherwise, is in which Java version your server needs.

Check plugins three times a year. Every drop requires updates for plugins that reach deep into server internals (WorldEdit, protection plugins, some economy plugins). Before you update, check the plugin page for a build for the new version. Plugins that only use the regular API usually keep working.

World upgrades are one-way. Once your world has run on 26.2, 1.21.11 will not open it. Always take a backup through the Backups tab before touching the version selector. It takes a minute and saves a world.

Modpacks lag behind, and that is normal. All The Mods 10 and Pixelmon 9.4 are still on 1.21.1 in September 2026, Prominence II on 1.20.1. Only All The Mods 11 has moved to 26.1.2, and it is still in alpha. If you run a modpack, the pack decides your version, not the newest drop.

Should you update now?

For a vanilla or Paper server with a handful of plugins: yes, 26.2 is stable and Paper has a release for it. Check your plugins have a 26.2 build, take a backup, set Java to 25, switch version, restart. Fifteen minutes.

For a server with many plugins or a network: wait for 26.2 builds of everything you run, and test on a copy first. In the panel you make that copy by restoring a backup onto a second server.

For a modpack server: do nothing until the pack itself moves.

Trying the 26.3 snapshots

The 26.3 snapshots are in the version selector under Vanilla. Never run them on your main world; a snapshot world is not guaranteed to open in the final release. A test server with a copy of your world is the safe route.

Why did Mojang switch to year numbers?

Because the old numbering said nothing about when something came out. 26.1 now means: first drop of 2026. That makes it easier to see how old a server or modpack is.

Can I stay on 1.21.11?

Yes. Older versions remain available in the version selector and Paper still maintains 1.21.11. You only miss the new content, and over time plugin authors stop updating for old versions.

Will my Bedrock players on Geyser still work after the update?

Geyser usually follows Java releases within days. Check the Geyser download page for a 26.2 build before you update, otherwise Bedrock players cannot join for a while. How Geyser works is in our GeyserMC guide.

Every HostValues Minecraft plan has 26.2 and the 26.3 snapshots in the version selector, with Java 25 as a panel option.
