A technically perfect server with zero players is a wasted effort. Most server owners underestimate how much work it takes to attract players and keep them around. This article covers what works, what does not and where to spend your time.
Server listing sites
The foundation. Register your server on listing sites so players who are searching can find you:
Tips for your listing:
- Write a clear description. Mention the server type (SMP, creative, minigames), the version and what makes your server stand out.
- Upload an attractive server icon (64x64 pixels) and a banner if the site supports it.
- Ask your players to vote. Many lists rank by votes; the higher you rank, the more visibility you get.
Discord
Every serious server needs a Discord. It is your community's home base:
- Set up channels for rules, announcements, general chat, suggestions and support tickets.
- Link in-game chat to Discord with DiscordSRV.
- Post updates, screenshots and event announcements. Activity attracts new members.
- Advertise in Discord servers that allow promotion (search for "minecraft server advertising" on listing sites like disboard.org).
Reddit and forums
- r/mcservers: the largest subreddit for server promotion. Follow the posting rules strictly; moderators remove posts that do not match the format.
- r/MinecraftBuddies: aimed at smaller groups and friend servers.
- The SpigotMC and PaperMC forums have sections for server advertisements.
What does not work
- Spamming random Discord servers: earns you bans, not players.
- Bot accounts for fake votes: listing sites detect this and permanently remove your listing.
- Paid ads on Google or social media: the cost per player is far too high for a hobby server. Only viable for commercial networks with a revenue model.
- Copying large servers: if your server is identical to Hypixel but with three players online, nobody will choose you. Find something that sets you apart.
Keeping players around
Attracting new players is step one. Retaining them is more important:
- First impression: a well-built spawn, a short welcome message and clear rules. The first five minutes decide whether a player stays.
- Community: respond to messages in Discord, know your regulars by name, organise events.
- Stability: crashes, lag and downtime drive players away faster than a bad spawn ever could.
- Updates: add something new on a regular basis. A new area, a seasonal event, a fresh plugin. Standing still means falling behind.
Creating content
Short clips of your server on TikTok or YouTube Shorts can bring in new players if they show genuine moments and capture the atmosphere. A full YouTube channel is only worth the effort if you enjoy making videos; do not treat it purely as a marketing tool.
How long before I have players?
Expect 5 to 15 visitors from listing sites in the first week. After a month of active promotion and vote collecting, 20 to 50. Large servers grew over months and years, not days.
Should I set up a web store?
Only once you have enough players to justify it. A store (Tebex) where players buy cosmetic items or ranks can help cover server costs. Never sell pay-to-win items; that drives players away and violates the Minecraft EULA.
Does the server version matter for attracting players?
Yes. Most players run the latest release. If your server is stuck on an old version, you limit your audience. Use ViaVersion if you want to support multiple client versions connecting to the same server.
