Nether portal linking is one of the most misunderstood mechanics in Minecraft. The principle is simple: the Nether is 8 times smaller than the Overworld. One block in the Nether equals 8 blocks in the Overworld. But if you get the placement wrong, you end up at the wrong portal or Minecraft creates a new one in a place you did not intend.
The basic calculation
To link a portal in the Nether to a portal in the Overworld:
- Note the Overworld coordinates of your portal (X and Z). The Y coordinate does not factor into the calculation, but it needs to be correct when you place the Nether-side portal.
- Divide X and Z by 8. These are the coordinates where you need to build your portal in the Nether.
- Build the portal in the Nether at exactly those coordinates.
Example: your Overworld portal is at X=800, Z=400. Your Nether portal should be at X=100, Z=50.
Going the other way (Nether to Overworld)
If you have a portal in the Nether and want to know where it will link in the Overworld, multiply X and Z by 8. A Nether portal at X=50, Z=25 links to Overworld X=400, Z=200.
Why it goes wrong
- Portal not at the exact coordinates: Minecraft searches for the nearest existing portal within a radius. If another portal is closer to the calculated target, you get sent there instead.
- Portals too close together: two Overworld portals less than 128 blocks apart (16 in the Nether) can link to the same Nether portal, creating a one-way loop.
- Minecraft generates a new portal: if no portal exists near the target coordinates, the game creates one. This auto-generated portal often ends up in an awkward location (above lava, inside a wall).
Step-by-step correct linking
- Build the portal in the Overworld and note the coordinates (press F3 in Java Edition).
- Go through the portal. Minecraft creates a Nether-side portal, but possibly not at the ideal spot.
- Destroy the auto-generated Nether portal.
- Calculate the correct coordinates (Overworld X / 8, Z / 8).
- Build a new portal at the calculated coordinates in the Nether.
- Go through the Nether portal. You should arrive back at your Overworld portal.
Nether highways for fast travel
The 1:8 ratio makes the Nether ideal for fast travel. Walk 125 blocks through the Nether and you cover 1,000 blocks in the Overworld. Many SMP servers build Nether highways: straight tunnels through the Nether with portals leading to bases, farms and points of interest. Ice roads with boats in the Nether are even faster, because boat speed on ice translates to enormous Overworld distances.
Tips for reliable linking
- Always build your Nether portal manually at the calculated coordinates. Do not rely on auto-generated portals.
- Keep at least 128 Overworld blocks (16 Nether blocks) between portal pairs to avoid cross-linking.
- If a portal links to the wrong place, destroy the incorrect Nether-side portal and rebuild it at the right coordinates.
- Use an online Nether portal calculator if you prefer not to do the maths by hand.
Does portal linking work differently on a server?
No. The mechanic is identical to singleplayer. The only complication on a server is that multiple players building portals can interfere with each other's links when portals are too close together.
Can I change the portal search radius?
On Paper, yes. In paper-world-defaults.yml you can adjust portal-search-radius and portal-create-radius. The default search radius is 128 blocks in the Overworld and 16 in the Nether.
Does this work for the End?
No. The End does not have a portal linking mechanic. The End portal always sends you to the central island, and the return portal sends you back to your spawn point.
