Minecraft 26.2, subtitled Chaos Cubed, launched on 16 June 2026. It is the second major update under the new version numbering system (after 26.1 in March) and brings significant changes to world generation, new mobs, and a handful of mechanics that players have been requesting for a long time.
This article covers the highlights and, more importantly, what the update means for anyone running a server.
New biomes
Chaos Cubed adds several new biomes, including transition variants that smooth the borders between existing biomes. The old hard-line boundaries between, say, a desert and a forest are replaced with gradual transitions featuring their own vegetation, terrain shapes, and mob spawns. The result is a world that feels more natural and less procedurally stitched together.
These new biomes only generate in chunks that have not been explored yet. Your existing builds and explored areas remain untouched.
New mobs
The update introduces new hostile and neutral mobs, each with unique behavior that interacts with existing game mechanics. The hostile mobs add new threats in the transition biomes, while the neutral mobs provide new resources and interactions.
From a server perspective, more mob types means more entity AI calculations per tick. On a server that was already close to its performance limit, the additional mobs in newly generated chunks may cause a small TPS dip. Paper 26.2 includes optimizations to mitigate this.
New blocks and items
Chaos Cubed adds new decorative blocks and crafting materials tied to the new biomes. Players exploring the transition zones will find unique vegetation blocks, new stone variants, and crafting ingredients that open up new recipes.
Server impact
What 26.2 means for your server in practical terms:
- Java 25 required. Just like 26.1, Minecraft 26.2 only runs on Java 25. In your game panel, check the Startup tab and make sure Java 25 is selected. If it still shows Java 21, the server will not start. See which Java version your server needs for the full table.
- New chunks only. The new biomes, structures, and mobs appear only in chunks that have not been generated yet. Existing areas of your world do not change. To see the new content, players need to explore uncharted territory. If you want a completely fresh world, generate a new one with a new seed.
- Plugin compatibility. Most Paper plugins work without changes on 26.2. Plugins that hook deep into NMS (net.minecraft.server) internals may need updates. Check the plugin page on SpigotMC, Modrinth, or Hangar before updating. Common plugins like EssentialsX, LuckPerms, and WorldGuard had 26.2 builds within days of release.
- Performance. Paper 26.2 includes optimizations that keep TPS stable despite the new content. Update to the latest Paper build for the best performance. If you were running a tuned 26.1 server, your existing Paper configuration carries over without changes.
How to update to 26.2
- Make a backup. Use the Backups tab in the game panel. This is not optional.
- Go to the Startup tab in the game panel.
- Select Paper 26.2 (or the specific build you want).
- Confirm that Java 25 is selected as the Docker image.
- Start the server. Paper migrates the configuration automatically.
The entire process takes about five minutes. If something goes wrong, restore the backup and you are back where you started.
Do players need to update?
Yes. Players must run Minecraft 26.2 in their launcher to connect to a 26.2 server. The Java Edition launcher offers a version selector in the Installations tab. Bedrock players connecting via Geyser do not need to change their Bedrock version; Geyser handles the protocol translation.
Should you update now or wait?
For a vanilla or Paper server with standard plugins: yes, update. 26.2 is stable, Paper has a mature build, and the new content gives players a reason to explore again.
For a server with many plugins or a complex network: check that every plugin has a 26.2 build, and test on a copy first. In the game panel you can restore a backup onto a second server to create that test environment without risking your main world.
For a modpack server: wait until the modpack itself updates. Most packs are still on 1.21.1 or 26.1. Trying to force a modpack onto a newer Minecraft version breaks things.
Can I keep the old biomes?
Existing chunks are not modified. Your current world stays exactly as it was. Only new, unexplored areas get the 26.2 biomes. If you want the entire world fresh with the new generation, create a new world with a new seed.
Are modpacks updated for 26.2 yet?
NeoForge and Fabric have 26.2 versions. Most popular mods are updated or in the process of updating. Large modpacks like All The Mods typically follow within weeks of a major update. Check CurseForge or Modrinth for the status of specific mods and packs.
Do I have to update?
No. If your current world and plugins run stable on 26.1, there is no urgent reason to update. Update when you want the new content, when your players ask for it, or when plugin support for 26.1 starts to fade.
26.2 runs on all Minecraft plans at HostValues with Java 25 available in the panel.
