A poorly secured game server is an invitation for griefers, cheaters and attackers. These 6 practices keep your server safe.
1. Use Strong Passwords
Your game panel, SFTP and RCON passwords should be unique and strong. Never use default passwords.
2. Limit Admin Access
Only give admin/operator rights to people you trust completely. Use subuser accounts with limited permissions for moderators.
3. Enable Whitelist or Password
For private servers, use a whitelist (Minecraft) or server password to control who joins.
4. Install Anti-Cheat
Use game-specific anti-cheat plugins or mods. Popular options include Spartan (Minecraft), EasyAntiCheat (Rust) and FiveGuard (FiveM).
5. Regular Backups
Create regular backups so you can roll back after griefing or corruption.
6. Keep Software Updated
Update your server software, plugins and mods regularly. Security patches fix known vulnerabilities that attackers exploit.
