ARK: Survival Ascended cluster setup: multiple maps

An ARK: Survival Ascended cluster lets players travel between multiple maps while keeping their character, dinos and items. Setting it up requires multiple servers and the right configuration.

What is a cluster?

A cluster is a group of ARK servers that share the same cluster ID. Players can upload their character at an obelisk or supply drop on one map and download it on another.

How much RAM per map?

ARK: Survival Ascended runs on Unreal Engine 5 and is heavy. Each map needs at least 16GB of RAM. With mods or more than ten players, 24GB is realistic.

Step by step

  1. Order multiple servers: one per map, each with at least 16GB RAM.
  2. Choose a cluster ID: a random string identical on all servers.
  3. Set the cluster ID: add -clusterid=mycluster2026 to each server's command line.
  4. Pick the map per server: The Island, Scorched Earth, Aberration, Extinction, or community maps.
  5. Configure transfers: in GameUserSettings.ini set which items and characters may transfer.
  6. Use the same mods: all servers must have the same mod list in the same order.

Backups

Backups are extra important with a cluster. A corrupted save on one map can damage cluster data. Schedule backups for each map at the same time.
