Project Zomboid is one of the most detailed zombie survival games available, and the multiplayer experience makes it even better. In this guide, you'll learn step by step how to set up a dedicated server.
System Requirements for a PZ Server
- RAM: Minimum 4 GB for 4-8 players. 6-8 GB for 10-32 players.
- CPU: PZ is CPU-intensive due to zombie AI. Choose a server with high single-thread performance.
- Storage: 5-10 GB, depending on mod size and world size.
Installing the Server
At HostValues, you can install Project Zomboid with one click through the game panel. Manually, it's done via SteamCMD with app ID 380870. Start the server once to generate all configuration files.
Important Server Settings
The main settings are in servertest.ini:
- MaxPlayers: Maximum number of players
- PVP: PvP on or off
- SleepAllowed: Whether players can sleep
- ZombieCount: Zombie density (1-4, 4 = insane)
- Map: Which map is loaded
Adding Mods
Mods are added via Steam Workshop IDs in the server config. Add the Workshop ID to WorkshopItems and the Mod ID to Mods. Popular mods: Brita's Weapon Pack, Hydrocraft, More Traits.
Port Forwarding
PZ uses default ports 16261 (UDP) and 16262 (UDP). With a hosted server, you don't need to configure this yourself.
