Migrate your game server without downtime: step by step

Whether you are switching to a better host, choosing a different server location for lower ping, or simply need a newer machine: a server migration does not have to be a disaster. With the right preparation, your players can keep playing while you move everything in the background.

Step 1: create a full backup

Before you do anything, create a complete backup of your current server. This includes world files, configuration files, plugins and mods, and any databases. Download everything via SFTP to your own computer.

Step 2: set up the new server

Order your new server and install the same game, same version and same server type. Version mismatch is the most common cause of failed migrations. Start the server once so all default files are created, then stop it again.

Step 3: transfer and test

Upload your backup to the new server via SFTP. Overwrite the default files with your own. Watch out for file paths, permissions and port numbers. Start the new server, connect yourself and check that everything works correctly before letting your community switch over.

Step 4: redirect and clean up

If you use a custom domain, update the DNS A record to point to the new server. Keep your old server active for at least a week as a fallback, then cancel it.
