Craftopia combines elements of Minecraft, Zelda and Factorio in an open-world survival game. With crafting, farming, dungeon crawling and automation, the game offers something for everyone. A dedicated server lets you play with friends without anyone needing to host. Here is how to set one up.
Current state of multiplayer
Craftopia is in development and the multiplayer functionality is being actively improved. The dedicated server is available via SteamCMD. Keep in mind that updates sometimes affect server compatibility. Check after each game update whether your server version still matches.

Installation via SteamCMD
Download the Craftopia Dedicated Server via SteamCMD:

Configuration
Adjust the server settings in the configuration file. The main options:
- Server name: how your server appears in the browser.
- Password: protect your server so only invited players can join.
- Max players: limited by default; adjust based on your hardware.
- Game world: choose which world to load or let the server generate a new one.
Port setup
Craftopia uses the following ports by default:
- UDP for game traffic (check the current default port in the config, as it may change between versions)
- A query port for the server browser
Make sure both ports are open in your firewall. When hosting at home, forward them in your router to the internal IP of your server machine. Use an online port checker to verify they are reachable from outside.
Save games and backups
The server stores progress in a save folder containing the world, player data and all placed structures. Copy this folder regularly. Craftopia is in Early Access, which means updates can sometimes break saves. A recent backup is your safety net.
Automate your backups with a simple script that copies the save folder to another location. On Windows use a scheduled task; on a Linux VPS use cron.
Multiplayer tips
- Watch automation: large automation systems (conveyor belts, sorting machines) stress the server. Set guidelines for maximum factory size to prevent lag.
- Manage islands: Craftopia uses islands that are loaded individually. The more islands active at once (because players are on different islands), the heavier the load.
- Coordinate updates: make sure all players and the server run the same version. A version mismatch prevents players from connecting.
Can I play Craftopia crossplay on a dedicated server?
Craftopia supports crossplay between Steam and Xbox/Microsoft Store for regular co-op sessions. For dedicated servers, crossplay support depends on the current development status. Check the official patch notes for the latest information on crossplay for dedicated servers.
How many players can a Craftopia server handle?
The maximum depends on your server hardware and world complexity. A server with 8 GB RAM and 4 CPU cores can typically handle 8 to 16 players. Larger groups require more resources, especially if players build extensive automation systems. Start with a lower count and scale up as performance allows.
Do my saves work after a game update?
Usually yes, but not always. Craftopia is in Early Access and major updates can sometimes change the save structure. Back up before every update. If a save no longer loads after an update, you can sometimes revert to an earlier game version via Steam's beta tab to rescue your progress.
