Minecraft server hosting in Europe: which location?

When you rent a Minecraft server, the location of the machine matters more than most people think. A server in the wrong country adds 30 to 80 ms of latency, and in a game where block placement and PvP are tick-sensitive, that difference is very noticeable.

How latency affects gameplay

Minecraft runs at 20 ticks per second, so each tick is 50 ms. If your ping is 80 ms, your actions arrive more than a full tick late. In practice that means:

  • Block breaking and placing feels sluggish.
  • PvP hit registration becomes unreliable.
  • Elytra flying through tight spaces gets risky.
  • Redstone contraptions triggered by player actions can misfire.

Below 30 ms most players notice nothing. Between 30 and 60 ms it is playable but not ideal. Above 80 ms the experience degrades.

European datacenter locations

Most European hosting providers operate from a handful of well-connected cities. Here is what each region offers:

Picking the right location

The rule is simple: choose the location closest to the majority of your players. If your group is spread across Europe, the Netherlands or Germany are the safest bets because they sit in the middle of the European internet backbone with excellent peering.

If most of your players are in Eastern Europe or Scandinavia, Poland gives noticeably better latency than Western European locations.

What about US or Asian players?

Transatlantic ping is 80 to 120 ms at best, and Europe-to-Asia is even higher. If your group is truly global, pick the continent where most players are and accept that others will have higher latency. There is no location that gives everyone under 30 ms worldwide.

Network quality beyond ping

Low ping only helps if the connection is also stable. Look for providers that offer:

  • DDoS protection: game servers are frequent targets. Unprotected servers go down during attacks.
  • Multiple upstream providers: redundant connectivity means a single cable cut does not take your server offline.
  • NVMe storage: chunk loading and world saves benefit from fast disks, especially on servers with many players or large worlds.

Testing before you commit

Before renting, test your latency to the datacenter. Most providers publish a test IP or looking glass. We offer a live latency meter on our server locations page that pings each datacenter from your browser.

Can I change my server location later?

With most providers, including us, you can migrate to a different datacenter. Your world and settings transfer, though the IP address changes. An SRV record in DNS avoids players having to update the address.

Does server location affect TPS?

Not directly. TPS depends on CPU, RAM and world complexity. But if the server hardware sits in a poorly connected datacenter, network jitter can make a 20 TPS server feel worse than it is.

Is a dedicated IP necessary?

Not for most servers. A shared IP with a unique port works fine. A dedicated IP with a default port (25565) looks cleaner and lets you use a domain without an SRV record, but it does not improve performance.
